Greenham Common Specialities

by A warbler a day

After the Andover Bird Challenge in the morning I visited Greenham Common for an afternoon stroll. I hadn’t been there for more than 30 minutes when I spotted a small bird flitting in a gorse bush. I just about had time to get my binoculars trained on it to see it was grey above and reddish below and so definitely a Dartford Warbler. Then it disappeared again. As usual there was plenty of interest in the Fireplane area. On the patch of gravel opposite the plane itself there was a group of small birds which included a Woodlark as well as some Linnets. In the bushes on the other side of the path a male Stonechat was found perching and a Green Woodpecker took flight. A very successful trip!
