Sounds of spring.
by A warbler a day
I spent today strolling around Stockbridge Common Marsh (it was very wet) and Stockbridge Down. Around the marsh I heard, though did not see, my first warbler of the year, a calling Chiffchaff. I also heard the whinnying call of a Little Grebe.
Later on the down I heard a woodpecker drumming, again without seeing the bird. That was a bit of a theme today as I also heard several Jays without catching sight of them. The best birds seen were a small flock of Bullfinches, which are always a delight. Disappointingly despite Stockbridge Down being a good site for them I am still yet to see either Yellowhammer or Green Woodpecker this year.
Hopefully todays sunny and surprisingly mild weather will last for a while longer!
