A Finchtastic Weekend!
by A warbler a day
On Saturday I went down to Blashford Lakes. Whilst the weather was better than expected, the flooding meant that I was only able to visit the hides around Ivy Lake. fortunately the woodland was full of small birds with many finches visiting the feeders by the Woodland Hide including several siskins and a couple of Lesser Redpoll. More Lesser Redpoll were found in the Alder trees behind the Visitor Centre but unfortunately there was no sign of the Mealy Redpoll that have been seen there recently. A female Bullfinch was also spotted along the path to Ivy Lake South.
On the lake itself the usual selection of waterfowl was present; large nos of Wigeon and Teal, the latter seeming particularly frisky, and a few Shovelers, Gadwall and Pochards.
Yesterday I had shorter strolls around Danebury Ring and Rooksbury Mill. The latter provided the most interest in a Grey Wagtail on the river and a group of four Bullfinches (a male and 3 females).
