New Forest & the coast

by A warbler a day

Today I headed down to the New Forest. Parking at the Shatterford car park by Beaulieu Road station I walked to Denny Wood and back. The waterlogged ground prevented me from doing the whole route. However it was very quiet there this morning with only 1 Mistle Thrush, 1 Fieldfare, 1 Meadow Pipit and a few Coal Tits and Chaffinches seen. After lunch I stopped at Dibden Inclosure where I saw a few more common species of song bird but litle else.

Finally I ended the day at Calshot where Southampton Water meets The Solent. Loads of birds at last! Flocks of Brent Goose, Curlew, Wigeon and Teal, a few Oystercatchers, Redshanks and Shelducks, 2 Rock Pipits and, amongst a mixed flock of gulls, a Yellow-legged Gull.
